Grid Connection Point

GCP is a maintenance-free facility whose aim is to receive the electrical energy from generation units (mostly wind or photovoltaic farms) and to introduce
it into the electric energy distribution system.

The grid connection point (GCP) is, unlike most main supply point (MSP), a maintenance-free facility that receives electricity from generation units (e.g. wind farms or photovoltaic farms) and introduces it into the electricity distribution system. It is usually a substation with the transformation of medium voltage (depending on the issued connection conditions from 15 to 30 kV) to higher voltage, usually 110 kV, and prepared for control, signalling and measurements in the substation’s remote control and supervision system.

As part of grid connection point (GCP) works, Alterga offers:

  • turnkey investment implementation (design and build)
  • implementation of investments in the “build” system for entire facilities or their separate parts
  • construction, reconstruction, modernization of facilities of all voltage levels, in particular:
    • cubature infrastructure and general construction facilities
    • assembly and adjustment of traditional and modular primary equipment
    • assembly and comprehensive service of transformers (vacuuming and filling with oil)
    • installation of foundations, supporting structures for equipment and railing
    • prefabrication and assembly of cable, protection and control cabinets
    • installation and configuration of security equipment
    • installation of MV switchboards
    • installation of grounding units, chokes for reactive power compensation, and parallel capacitor banks
    • laying cable routes and cables
    • implementation of central and state-wide systems
    • construction of a grounding system, installation of a grounding grid and lightning protection
    • inspection and post-assembly measurements of primary and secondary parts, commissioning and start-up
  • construction of 110 kV and 220 kV cable systems
  • excavation and laying of cable routes, installation of indoor and outdoor joints and heads
  • construction of MV cable systems, excavation and laying of MV cable routes, installation of indoor and outdoor MV joints and heads

Grid Connection Point

A GCP, i.e. Grid Connection Point, is an important component of the energy infrastructure. Its role is to receive electricity generated, for example, by renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic installations or wind farms. Solar or wind energy goes to the GCP, where, after transformation, it is routed to the power grid.

The GCP substation plays an extremely important role in the energy transmission and distribution system. It can even be described as a kind of command centre for the flow of electricity from RES installations to the grid. Grid Connection Point is responsible, among other things, for transforming the energy coming from the generating installation, transforming it with the help of transformers to a level that enables its further transmission within the power grid.

MSP – what is it?

The operation of a GCP should be distinguished from a MSP, i.e. Main Supply Point. A MSP is usually a transformer station that is managed by distribution network operators. Its role is to supply electricity to a given area – this could be a large industrial facility or a town. MSPs can cover an area of up to several hectares and may contain high-voltage and medium-voltage switchgear, as well as power and auxiliary transformer stations.

GCP and MSP

The energy infrastructure requires both GCPs and MSPs. These are the two basic types of substations with transformers, control systems or converters. With the growing importance and popularity of RES installations, the use of GCPs will also increase. In the power system, the Grid Connection Point often plays the role of “injecting” energy into the power system, directing it precisely to the Main Supply Point, from which, in subsequent transmission stages, energy is sent to end consumers.

GCP substation from Alterga

Alterga offers a comprehensive GCP implementation service, both in terms of the reconstruction or modernisation of particular facilities, as well as the implementation of the project from the initial design stage to its turnkey implementation.

Alterga’s service allows for the construction of a fully unmanned facility, using state-of-the-art technologies to monitor and measure network voltage values or the quality of operation of individual equipment within the entire substation. The designed substations allow the conversion of medium voltage (10 to 30 kV) to higher voltage, typically 110 kV. Moreover, the GCP substation is equipped with a remote control system that facilitates the control of its management processes, monitoring of network parameters or optimisation of operation.

Details of our offer

The comprehensive Alterga GCP service includes:

  • design and construction of a modular substation system to collect energy from RES
  • adaptation of the GCP to the individual conditions and requirements of the investor and the project conditions
  • rapid and professional implementation of the investment and the highest quality control standards
  • the possibility of realising the investment in stages or the subsequent extension of the facility, e.g. by adding more power transformer units
  • turnkey project implementation
