Telecommunication installations and communication in the energy sector

In the field of electrical power distribution substations, as well as industrial facilities and power plants, we carry out design work related to communications and telecommunications. We develop comprehensive technical documentation including all phases of design i.e. analyses, concepts, possibly other study works, building and detailed designs, investor’s cost estimates, execution schedules etc. for the following communication means in the power sector:

  • PDH and SDH optical teletransmission and teleprotection devices
  • telemechanics supervision units in the facilities and dispatching centers (computer devices, dummies, dispatch tables)
  • radio teletransmission devices, with antenna systems (radio-access, radio links and masts)
  • teletechnical underground conduit systems, metallic and optical cables (overhead, direct burried, laid in concrete
    trenches) with legal documentation
  • LAN and WAN computer networks, structural cabling system
  • AC and DC guaranteed power supply equipment, power supply installations in buildings
  • PABX systems, DECT wireless communication, telephone installations
  • installations for access control, microwave barriers and CCTV systems
  • wire broadcasting

When preparing project documentation related to telecommunications installations we provide:

  • full surveying services
  • legal documentation
  • comprehensive inter-branch coordination of projects
  • technical consultancy
  • supervision of the execution of works on site
  • documentation with the use of modern software

Modern communication systems in power networks

The transformation of the energy sector and the shift toward new energy sources are driving significant changes in the structure and operation of power systems. This evolution requires increasingly advanced solutions in the field of telecommunications. At the same time, the telecommunications sector depends on a secure, well-developed, and efficiently operating power infrastructure. In this context, the design of communication systems for the energy sector is gaining strategic importance, serving as a critical enabler for the modernization and expansion of power grid infrastructure.

As Poland continues to upgrade and develop its modern distribution networks, a dedicated high-speed communication network for the power sector is simultaneously being built. This network plays a key role in supporting the growing share of renewable energy sources (RES) in the national energy mix. Due to the variable nature of renewable generation – driven by changing weather conditions – communication systems have become essential to maintaining the reliability, efficiency, and security of power network operations.

The digitalization of the power system is progressing in parallel with advancements in telecommunications and data transmission technologies. Conversely, the development of telecommunication networks depends on access to modern, robust power infrastructure – without which telecom installations cannot operate reliably. These two sectors have thus become mutually dependent and increasingly integrated. Their convergence is driving innovation and expanding the range of service providers offering specialized solutions, such as energy-sector-specific communication systems and advanced telecommunications infrastructure.

Energy sector communication

The need for coordinated development between the energy and telecom sectors has also been recognized by policymakers through legislation such as the Act on Supporting the Development of Telecommunications Services and Networks, which grants telecom operators legal access to power infrastructure. In practice, however, this relationship is bidirectional- modern power systems increasingly rely on reliable telecommunications installations tailored to energy-sector needs.

Alterga offers comprehensive design services for telecommunications systems and energy-sector communication infrastructure. This includes the preparation of technical and detailed designs, as well as cost estimates for:

  • digital teleprotection systems
  • access control systems
  • wired and wireless communication systems
  • fiber optic cabling installations
  • design and implementation of teletechnical systems for communication and data transmission
  • other specialized telecommunications solutions tailored to energy applications

Alterga’s offer covers the entire project lifecycle – from pre-design studies and preparatory work, through the development of full technical documentation, analyses, and conceptual design, to final detailed design in accordance with applicable standards and regulations. We utilize advanced design software and provide expert supervision during implementation.

Our engineers bring extensive experience from both domestic and international projects, including the deployment of telecommunications equipment on 5G network masts in Sweden.
