5G network implementation, Sweden

5G stands for fifth-generation mobile network, which is much faster than currently available networks and allows millions of additional devices to connect to the Internet, which will undoubtedly improve the functioning of many areas of our lives. Not only does 5G technology provide the ability to download and process photos, videos and other data faster, but it is also the ability to connect a huge number of new users. The innovative fifth-generation 5G mobile network technology ensures minimal data latency, which means that in practice the system responds a hundred times faster than current LTE networks, and is extremely stable and reliable.

INVESTMENT DATA

  • 19 telecommunications towers
  • Tele2 and Telenor network operators
  • 4G upgrade (speed increase of 200%)
  • 5G technology in the 700, 900, 2100 and 2600 MHz bands

CHALLENGE

Due to the rapid development of 5G technology in the Nordic countries and the need to provide end users with access to the new service offered by telecom companies Telenor and Tele2 as soon as possible, the #EltelNetworksTeam has been engaged to implement a 5G network for our business partner in Sweden.

The installation work on the telecommunications towers, adapting them to the latest 5G technology, was a pilot project for Eltel Networks. The biggest challenge was to complete the practical training in the field in the shortest possible time and fully master the principles of self-assembly of the new devices. The sites we worked on were of various types – installation took place on typical telecommunications towers, or an installation was located on the roof of a downtown building or on an industrial chimney. Our greatest adversary was the changeable weather, difficult atmospheric conditions, in particular very strong winds making it impossible to work at height.

The scope of work associated with the deployment of 5G networks by #EltelNetworksTeam included:

  • dismantling of existing equipment and devices from the control room of the control cabinets
  • installation of new antennas and cables in the control room of the newly
  • installed equipment
  • insertion of fibre optic cables into control cabinets
  • configuration of alarms, power supply, batteries (if they were replaced)
  • making test calls to 112 to see if the correct signal is received by the antennas
  • speed tests of Internet connections
  • preparation of as-built acceptance documentation of the completed work

After the installation, the most anticipated and quality-checking moment of our work was the test measurements of the connections at different frequencies. The positive results of the measurements confirmed that we had done our job correctly.

EFFECT

As part of the 5G network deployment project, Eltel Networks has upgraded 19 telecom towers to the latest 5G technology in the 700, 900, 2100 and 2600 MHz frequency bands for network operators Tele2 and Telenor. The work carried out by #EltelNetworks has resulted in a much faster, more cost-effective, stable and reliable Swedish transmission network, which will improve the quality of services provided to residential, public and business end users.

The 5G network deployment work in which we participated continued the largest mobile network upgrade in Swedish history. The availability of 5G networks throughout the country will enable the implementation of innovative solutions for a more efficient and sustainable society. While installing 5G technology, the 4G network was also significantly upgraded, increasing its speed by up to 200 percent and improving coverage throughout the country.

Participation in an international project to deploy fifth-generation 5G mobile network technology has enabled us to develop and really learn about the new technology. The work performed allowed us to acquire the necessary skills and practical knowledge, which we will use in the implementation of further work in this area both in Poland and abroad.
